Village Resort of Névache

A traditional mountain village

The ancient mountain village of Névache lies on France’s border with Italy, near the town of Briançon. Its history goes back centuries, and Névache comes from the name Annevasca meaning ‘snowy valley’, which was first recorded in 739.
It has around 350 inhabitants and is comprised of a succession of 7 hamlets, over a total area of some 19000 hectares, including the Vallée Etroite, a tiny French enclave on the Italian side of the border, and the stunning Haute Vallée de la Clarée (upper Clarée valley).

The Névache hamlets:

The valley does not contain modern construction styles, but rather a diverse range of traditional structures, such as wooden chalets, and Névache-style houses in stone and wood…

You will find shops in several of the hamlets, including a bakery, butchers, shop selling goat’s produce, as well as a honey farm, grocery, chocolatier and farm shop… And you will also find a sense of authentic village life, with most notably the beautiful St Marcellin church and the village’s various chapels.

Activities throughout the summer and winter

Névache lies in the heart of the Clarée valley, and as a result most of the activities on offer here are linked to the surrounding nature reserve.

In summer the valley becomes a haven for hikers but you will also find anglers, climbers and cyclists!

In winter you can cross-country ski, snowshoe, have a go at leading a dog sled, and go downhill skiing (2 ski lifts) and ski touring.

Névache and Music

In Névache we also love music.

In fact, the St Marcellin church in Névache has been hosting classical concerts for several years:

  • Coral pieces
  • Chamber music
  • Operatic concerts every summer with your Chalet d’en Hô host, Valérie, who is also a mezzo-soprano
  • And, since summer 2014, every August the church also plays host to the Festival de la Haute Clarée. Created by the pianist Zhu Xiao Mei, it offers a programme worthy of the world’s greatest concert halls.

The church’s outstanding acoustics make it a remarkable musical venue.

Persuaded? Come and explore Névache, a village resort in the heart of a valley nature reserve!
